Art Deco diamond bracelet, Van Cleef & Arpels.

The central circular-cut diamond collets of the bracelet alternate with twin hexagonal-cut diamonds, within a tapered, flexible border made up of baguette and brilliant-cut diamonds. Suspended from the main bracelet is a circular-cut diamond tassel, with sliding clasp. This piece was made in 1922 and is signed Van Cleef & Arpels Paris, no. 2071. This bracelet was listed in Christie's November 2012 Jewels sale.

The Patiala Necklace was a necklace created by the House of Cartier in 1928, It was made for and named after Bhupinder Singh of Patiala, the then ruling Maharaja of the state of Patiala. It contained 2,930 diamonds

A Belle Epoque colored diamond necklace, circa 1910. The neckchain is set with diamonds in a foliate motif - alternating flowers and leaves. At the bottom, an openwork pendant, suspending a large, pear-shaped yellowish brown diamond trimmed with single-cut diamonds. This necklace was listed in Christie's 22 April 2010 Jewels auction.

The Palffy family is of Hungarian nobility dating back to the 14th century. One of the richest and most influential families in the region from the 17th to 19th centuries, Karl Hieronymus Graf Palffy von Erdöd was elevated to the status of an Austrian Prince in 1807. The family tiara was made circa 1870 by the hand of Köchert, Vienna and is illustrated in their design book.

This beautiful Belle Epoque diamond garland necklace was made in 1900. It is designed as three foliate swags alternating three collet diamond swags hung from a necklace spaced by ribbon-tied bows. Each swag is centered by a cushion diamond cluster pendant, millegrain set. S.J. Philips

In December 2012, Sotheby’s featured the jewelery collection of the Late Michael Wellby. Born into a family of silver dealers, Mr. Wellby found that period jewelry captured his attention, so much so, that he collected breathtaking pieces from periods spanning five centuries.

Educated at Marlborough College, at the age of 18, he joined his father’s business H.S. Wellby in Halkin Arcade in Knightsbridge. During the 1940s and 1950s, he began to deal in German silver, (which at the time was unpopular and undervalued), realising that pieces he could buy at little more than melt value were amongst the finest examples of the silversmith’s art. In the 1960s he moved the business to Grafton Street in Mayfair, where it soon became a required stop for any visiting continental dealer or collector. During his long career Michael Wellby also built up a highly important private collection of European silver and Works of Art, which he has bequeathed to the Ashmolean Museum.

The jewels in his collection include some of the finest examples of the greatest goldsmiths of the last five centuries, in addition to important Renaissance jewels and exquisite creations of 19th century novelty. Mr. Wellby had a fine taste for extravagant jewelry and even includes several pieces by Fouquet and Lalique.

The diamond wheat sheaf tiara was estimated to fetch anywhere from 60,000 – 80,000 GBP, and brought in 373,250 GBP

Catalogue Note- Wheat Tiara

Designed as two wheat sheaf’s each tied together with a ribbon bow, set throughout with cushion-, pear-shaped, circular-, single-cut and rose diamonds, inner circumference approximately 330mm, few small diamonds deficient, each wheat sheaf detachable from frame and can be worn as brooches, bows detachable with additional brooch fittings, accompanied by later fitted case.

Although the 19th century was a period of great change through industrialisation jewellery designers often looked to the past for inspiration. This tiara in the neo-classical taste, is composed of a wreath of ears of wheat and is emblematic of prosperity, abundance and fruitfulness; it would be highly appropriate if such a tiara were worn at a wedding. In ancient Greece, tiaras of laurel leaves, oak or naturalistic branches would crown the victorious or be worn by women to display their prominent status in society. Emperor Napoleon I was often depicted in portraiture in his coronation robes and wearing a golden laurel wreath to display his status and grandeur.

Composed of a series of swags, with ribbon and floral motifs, suspending three detachable tassels, set with rose diamonds, measuring approximately 240 x 130mm, later fitted case.

This piece demonstrates the 18^th Century Fashion for using jewellery to decorate not only the neck but also the dress as well. A jewel of this size is extremely rare as many pieces were often broken up and sold or re-set to keep up with ever changing fashions. The use of rose diamonds allowed the jeweller to shape the stones into the design they wanted while foiling on the reverse of the stones gave a beautiful soft sparkle in the candlelight. The quality of the work on this jewel is evident not only in the articulation but also in the layer of gold applied on the reverse which would have protected the valuable garments from being soiled through the oxidization of the silver mounts.

This piece would have been sown onto the front of the bodice, the loops on either end allowing for a ribbon to be added so the jewel could be worn as an elaborate choker.

A Headpiece With A Touch Of The Past

The desire to adorn one’s head with beauty first manifested itself in the creation of wreaths of foliage and flowers. In ancient Greece, laurel wreaths were presented to champions and myrtle served to symbolize newlyweds. Through the study of ancient paintings, sculpure and tapestry, we can see that wreaths also served as a symbol of wealth and men of stature. The term diadem is from the Greek diadein means – "to bind around". Early Greek diadems were basically renderings of their botanical predecessors in gold, as bands with pediments. A tiara differs from the diadem, another style of ancient ornamental headband, which was worn by Eastern monarchs. Head dresses started out as simple ribbons that were tied around the head of a king as an emblem of regal power or dignity.

The Romans, while emulating the Greeks, were not as skilled in their designs. However, it was the Greeks, who first intoduced gemstones to enhance the traditional leaves and flowers on diadems and tiaras. Women of rank were rendered in portraits and sculpture wearing golden bandeaux, wreaths and halos.

In ancient times Laurel leaves were thought to be tokens of peace and laurel branches became heraldic symbols. Laurel wreaths were given to winners, or victors in the early Olympic games and as a symbol of victory later worn by Roman conquerors such as Julius Caesar. The fall of the Roman Empire and the rise of Christianity drive the wearing of diadems, tiaras and crowns from fashion. Tiaras continued to be depicted in art but not actually worn. The French Emperor Napoleon and his Empress, Josephine, both wore the diadem at his coronation. In the Coronation painting by Jacques Louis David he is pictured wearing the stunning ‘golden’ laurel wreath, which was a tribute to his military successes. Each ‘laurel’ leaf represented a victory. Josephine wore a diamond diadem, which was made for the coronation in 1804 and sold in 1887 by the French Republic when it was purchased by the jewelry store of Van Cleef and Arpels at New York.

In the early 21st century, a new fashion emerged called "boho chic".  The style drew upon various bohemian and hippie influences. Actress Sienna Miller and model Kate Moss in the United Kingdom were known to fuel this trend, along with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen in the United States. This trend had been going on since late 2000 and continues to be popular.

We give you 10 tips to successfully pulling off this look......

1. Natural Face, Natural Beauty

The bohemian looks are about looking natural.

If you have flawless skin, your among %1 of the American women out there. Congratulations! We all know magazines are touched up, and the majority of us look washed out without some sort of concealer, foundation or power applied to their skin.

Here are a couple tips to making your skin look flawless for your wedding day.

A. Moisturize

Make sure your skin is moisturized before you apply foundation. If you don't apply some sort of moisturizer, your make up will look flaky through out the rest of the day. Try out a number of moisturizers under your foundation to see which works the best. Some moisturizers can make your skin look greasy, and adding extra power will just make it look cakey.

B- Use The Professional Concealers

Color concealer works miracles when it comes to making red blemishes disappear. The idea is to use these concealers sparingly. Apply on the skin with a soft brush, and let it dry before adding your foundation. For small blue veins, use a peach/orange colored concealer to neutralize it first. For a red complexion, use a green tinted primer. These colored concealers work by covering up dark circles, acne, and veins, allowing you to use less foundation, so your skin looks more like skin, and less like cake layers.

C.  Add Definition To Your Face.

Playing up your natural features is an art to some celebrities.  Kim Kardashian's make up artists seem to do the very best job when it comes to contouring make-up.

Kim uploaded some pictures on Instagram of the contouring process her Make-up Artist Scott Barnes takes when applying her make-up.   Study some of Kim's photos under google to get an idea where to shade, while at the same time, keeping it very natural.  I have found to use the bright white power sparingly.  I tend to have my foundation set, and power set before I start shading.  A little goes a long way.

Contouring make-up is basically highlighting the areas of your face, so they are more visible and defined.   When I used to be involved in swimsuit pageants, I would shade in muscles along my abs with a powdered bronzer (without shine), to make them appear more prominent, but at the same time natural.  These tricks work every time!

Add a bit of definition under your brow to add a natural highlight.  In the past I have used Loreal's Morning Light.  Shade in the sides of your nose to give a thinner appearance.  Shade under your eyes, using a creamier white, something without shine.  Shade under your cheek color with a creamy white shade to give your cheeks more definition.  Blend, blend, blend.... and your natural look, will still be natural, but so much more glamorous!

D- Where To Add Color

Bohemian looks are simple, yet at the same time, also define the natural attributes of a women's face, such as her lips, her eyes, and brows.  Think about flushed peach or pink  for your cheek colors, and glossy lips.

Consider using Covergirls- Outlast Lip Cover that comes with a gloss.  I use this product, and often wipe off the lip stain, so the lip color isn't as prominent, and leave my lips bare.  I find the Outlast lip stain, generally lasts all day long, compared to other stains which are gone within the hour.  Lighter colors are generally more youthful than darker appearances.  Lighter looks better no matter how old you are.  To add even more definition, consider picking up a very natural colored lip liner, close to your skin color, and line your lips before adding the top color.  You can even go outside your natural lips lines slightly to add a fuller appearance.

Your eye colors can be as dark or as light as you want them with a neutral lip.  You could go for a heavy natural eye, or as simple as you would like it.  With either look, consider applying a set of natural false lashes on your wedding to give a more intense lash line.  Avoid black lengthening  mascaras, but rather stick to brown and softer shades.   Use a lash curler to set prominence to your beautiful lashes.

Add a touch of definition to the arch of the brows, paying up your natural attributes as best as you can.  Consider having your brows professionally shaped, and define them more on your wedding day.  Add whiter shading under the brow, on the eye lid, and use a bit of a darker color to color in the crease.  Revlon's Just Nudes, or Seashell are great ways of adding dimension for the eye.  This crease color looks natural, and at the same time, adds so much attention to your natural beautiful eyes.  Cream eye shadow tends to do the trick for adding a shade to the area of the skin that folds when your eyes are open.

Monaco's Princess Charlene made headlines as she arrived to a lavish multi-course gala dinner wearing a modern brand new custom designed headpiece symbolizing the Olympic swimmer's love for the sea. Her headpiece was an expensive version of this new modern look.

The tiara made by French-German jeweler Lorenz Baumer, named the "Diamond Foam" tiara was made in white gold and nearly 60 karats worth of diamonds. The overall design evoked the spray thrown off a crashing wave. Thin strips of diamonds arch up from behind the left ear and fan out in an explosion at the temple. Large round cut diamonds, the largest weighing 8 karats, punctuate the ends of the sparkling arcs.

The palace contacted many jewelry houses to submit designs for a tiara that was to be among the prince's wedding gifts to his bride.

This crown was ordered by Queen Victoria for her personal use and at her own expense in 1870.  She found the Imperial State crown often came with a headache...... literally! She found removing the Imperial crown  from the Tower of London came with paperwork and protocol, that she had her own crown made.  The smaller crown allowed her to wear her veil, where as the Imperial crown made it rather uncomfortable because of the size.

The small crown resembles the look of the previous British crowns.   The crown is made up of four half arches which are met at a monde, on which sits a cross. Each half arch runs from the monde down to a cross pattee along the band at the bottom. Between each cross patee is a fleur-de-lis. The crown does not have an internal cap. The crown is made of silver, and contains 1187 diamonds which all came from a necklace owned by Queen Victoria.

Queen Victoria first used the crown on the State Opening of Parliament in Westminster on 9th February 1871. It was worn by her on all State Occasions after that date where she was required to wear a crown.

Technically the crown belonged to Queen Victoria personally rather than the British Crown, and therefore did not form part of the British Crown Jewels.  However, before her passing Queen Victoria left it to the British Crown. In 1937 King George VI ordered that it should be moved from Windsor Castle and added to the regalia kept in The Tower of London where it remains on show to this day.

1.  The St Edwards Crown

The St Edwards crown is the most important of all the crown jewels.   This is the very crown that the monarch is crowned at the ceremony of the coronation.  When the monarchy was restored on 29th May, 1660, everything was made new before there could be a coronation. Traditionally, this crown is only used in the actual moment of crowning, and never never worn again during the reign.

The crown is made of solid gold. Up until George V’s coronation it was set with paste stones and enamel mounts, but all of that changed in 1911, for the coronation of George V.  The crown was permanently set with semi-precious stones, and the imitation pearls were replaced with gold beads, which were plated with platinum.

2. The Imperial State Crown

The Imperial State Crown is the most magnificent of all the British Crown Jewels.  It was made in 1838 for the coronation of Queen Victoria, and then altered for the coronation of George VI in 1937 and Elizabeth II in 1953.   This crown replaced the crown of St. Edward immediately after the coronation.   The crown is modern in design, however it is set with ancient gems.

The Cullinan diamond decorates brow of the Imperial State Crown, just below the Black Princes Ruby. It was found in Africa in 1905 weighing 3601 carats – the largest diamond in the world.  The Transvaal Government made a gift of the enormous stone to Edward VII who then had it cut into several pieces. The largest piece known as the The Star of Africa was set into the King’s sceptre, and the second largest "The Cullinan II- Second Star of Africa" was mounted to the front of the Imperial State Crown.  The Imperial State Crown also contains 4 rubies, 11 emeralds, 17 sapphires, 277 pearls and over 3000 diamonds.

3. Imperial Crown Of India

The Imperial Crown of India was made for King George V to wear at the Delhi Durbar in 1911.  The Imperial State Crown cannot be taken out of England, and will probably never be worn again.  It's significance is now purely historical.

The crown has eight half arches which spring from the cross pattee and fleur-de-lis, and it contains a remarkably fine emerald, a number of other emeralds, sapphires, rubies and over 6000 diamonds which were sent over from India.

The Imperial Crown of India is not part of the British Crown Jewels. King George and Queen Mary travelled to Delhi for the Durbar service proclaiming them Emperor and Empress of India to the princess of India. The King was not crowned at the service because the Archbishop of Canterbury did not think it suitable for a Christian religious service to take place in a predominantly Hindu country.  Therefore, the King wore the crown when he entered the arena where the Durbar took place.

4. Queen Mary’s Crown

Queen Mary’s Crown is set entirely with diamonds and crystals was made for Queen Mary when she was crowned Queen Consort with George VI in 1911.  This crown originally contained the 3d Star of Africa, and the 4th Star of Africa in the band. Both of these diamonds were cut from the Cullinan I diamond, which is the biggest diamond in the world.  Both diamonds are the personal property of Queen Elizabeth II and are not part of the Crown Jewels. They are known as the Lesser stones of Africa and were mounted in such a way that they can be removed and worn separately as a pendant or brooch. These stones were replaced by replica crystal stones.

The crown contains eight half arches. Unlike any other coronation crowns, it was specially constructed, so that its arches could be removed, allowing for the crown to be worn as a circlet. Queen Mary used the crown in circlet form at the coronation of George VI and at State Ceremonies involving her granddaughter Queen Elizabeth II.

5. Queen Mother’s Crown

The crown is based on a circlet worn by Queen Victoria and was worn by HM Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother at the coronation in 1937. The band is encrusted with diamonds, and set on it are four alternate cross pattee and fleur-de-lis. The famous Koh-i-Noor diamond is set in the front cross pattee like Queen Mary’s Crown. The crown contains 2800 diamonds, and contains the  Koh-i-Noor, and he 17 carat diamond which was given to Queen Victoria in 1856 by the Sultan of Turkey

6. King George IV State Diadem

The King George IV State Diadem forms part of the Crown Jewels. The Diadem was made in 1820 for the coronation of George VI. The diadem included 1333 diamonds weighing 327.75 carats and 169 pearls along the base. In between the four crosses it features the rose, thistle and shamrock.which are the symbols the England, Scotland and Ireland.

The diadem was also worn during the coronation procession of Queen Victoria and later Queen Elizabeth II. This is the diadem that appears on Queen Victoria (without the cap)on the penny black and all of her subsequent stamps.

7. Queen Mary’s Circlet

Queen Mary’s circlet is taken from Queen Mary’s original crown which was constructed in such a way that the arches could be removed allowing the crown to be worn as a circlet. Queen Mary used the crown in circlet form at the coronation of George VI and at State ceremonies involving her granddaughter Queen Elizabeth II.

Initially commissioned by Queen Victoria, this piece has undergone
various changes throughout the years. It currently features 25 graduated
cushion-cut brilliant diamonds ranging in sizes of up to 11.25 carats, set in silver and gold links.
The 26th diamond, known as the Lahore Diamond, weighs 22.48 carats and
hangs as a pendant. This marvelous necklace was also worn by Queen
Alexandra, Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, and Queen
Elizabeth II at their coronations.

In 1945, 18-year-old Princess Elizabeth convinced her father that she
should be allowed to contribute directly to the war effort. She joined
the Women's Auxiliary Territorial Service, where she was known as No
230873 Second Subaltern Elizabeth Windsor, trained as a driver, and
drove a military truck while she served.

Princess Elizabeth's only sibling was the late Princess Margaret, who
was born in 1930. The two young princesses were educated at home,
under the supervision of their mother. Their governess was Marion
Crawford, better known as "Crawfie". She studied history
with C. H. K. Marten, Provost of Eton, and also learned modern
languages; she speaks French fluently. She was instructed in religion
by the Archbishop of Canterbury and has remained a devout member of
the Church of England.As a granddaughter of the British sovereign in
the male line, she held the title of a British princess, with the
style "Her Royal Highness," her full style being "Her
Royal Highness Princess Elizabeth of York". At the time of her
birth, she was third in the line of succession to the throne, behind
her uncle, the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII), and her
father. Although her birth generated public interest, there was no
reason at the time to believe that she would ever become queen, as it
was widely assumed that the Prince of Wales would marry and have
children in due course. However, Edward did not produce any legitimate
heirs, and Elizabeth's parents had no sons (who would have taken
precedence over her). Therefore, she would eventually have become
queen whether Edward had abdicated or not.

The case this tiara originally was stored in was stamped with the initials 'MP'- likely Mary Selina Charlotte Portman, daughter of Viscount Milton, who married 2nd Viscount Portman June, 1855.  Starry Diadem reveals the interesting story behind this tiara.  This tiara, created by Hunt and Roskell in 1855.  The overall design of oak leaves and acorns set in diamonds, mounted on an open-backed silver and gold frame, the main two side pieces can be dismounted from the frame and worn as as hair combs or even a  corsage.  The two side elements are shown on Starry Diadem mounted on a pair of tortoiseshell combs.

Born into a Jewish banking and industrial family in Nuremberg in 1926, Anne Hull Grundy, left Germany for England when Hitler rose to power in 1933. Her father re-established the family’s manufacture of metal pressed toys in Northampton and by 1939 Mettoy was a successful company.

Following the war years, when the company produced jerry cans and machine gun parts, Mettoy introduced the hugely successful Corgi range of die-cast zinc toys. It was these Corgi toys, together with income from the Keyser-Ullman bank, which later provided Hull Grundy with the wealth which enabled her to
form one of the finest jewellery collections in the world.

Hull Grundy started collecting when she was eleven. Tragically, she was disabled by a respiratory condition at the age of twenty-one, which tied her to a wheelchair and ultimately to her bed, but that didn't stop her passion for collecting extraordinary jewels.  She dedicated her life to the study and collecting of European jewellery and Japanese ivories. Buying many of the pieces for her collections by post, she assembled thousands of exquisite pieces of jewellery, but only ever wearing a wedding band on her hand.

Thanks to Hull Grundy, Britain’s museums are much richer in jewellery today.British Museum was given some of the most important pieces from her collection in 1978, including this tiara. The tiara is on permanent display at the British Museum.

This piece originally belonged to the Queen Mother. It was an anniversary gift from her husband, King George VI. Among her collection, this wasn't a real favorite. She didn't wear it often before gifting it to her granddaughter, Princess Anne. Anne had the gem altered at some point; she shortened it to make it easier to wear.

The Egyptians are said to have started the trend of having royalty wear a tiara as a sign of power. Egyptian hieroglyphs show kings and queens wearing elaborate headdresses. These do not resemble the tiaras that are worn by modern royalty. However, they served the same purpose. Here are the tiaras that are currently the most valuable:

1. The Tiara Of Eugenie

This particular tiara sold for an amazing 7.8 million British pounds. This is the current world record price paid for a tiara. It is set with several pearl shaped diamonds and emeralds. The history of the piece is interesting and unique. It gets its name because it was once owned by Napoleon III’s wife. Her full name was Eugenia María de Montijo de Guzmán. It was originally made for the second wife of Guido Henckel von Donnersmarck. He was one of the wealthiest men in the world during the 19th century. The tiara has 11 Colombian emeralds that are pear-shaped. It weighs in at a whopping 500 carats.

2. Thailand tiara

There is no official name for this particular tiara. However, it is legendary within the jewelry community. The price of the tiara is $4.2 million. However, it is not only the price that surprises many people about this piece. It was created by a designer in Thailand named Riwin Jirapolsek for his pet dog. The dog was of the Maltese pedigree. As the story goes, Riwin wanted the dog to feel special. If only the dog knew it was wearing the second most valuable tiara in the world.  See the tiara here

3. The Emerald Queen Victoria Tiara

This piece is said to have been designed by Prince Albert, the husband of Victoria, the longest reigning queen in British history. He gave it to her as a gift. The tiara is said to be worth in the neighborhood of $2.5 million. As you might gather from its name, it is set with emeralds. It is one of the most important pieces in the legendary Crown Jewels collection worn by British royalty.

4. The Italian Tiara

This tiara resides in the collection of Princess Maria Gabriella of Savoy. She is the middle daughter of Umberto II, the last king of Italy. It is set with a diamond that is eight carats and shaped like a pear. This tiara is renowned around the world for its superb craftsmanship. It is easy to understand this when you consider the fact that it is reportedly worth $2 million.

5. Princess Margaret’s Tiara

This tiara was once owned by Princess Margaret of England. She was the younger sister of Elizabeth II, the current queen of England. The history of this tiara is a bit murky. She supposedly wore it during her wedding. During some important events, she is also said to have worn it as a brooch and a necklace. It is estimated to be worth $1.7 million. This is another piece of the Crown Jewels collection, which is kept in the Tower of London when not being used. Tourists can view the Crown Jewels while touring the Tower of London.

Cavalli's 2011 collection featured dresses of shredded and slashed snakeskin. Long blonde hair extensions added a layered element to the dramatic fringing that was the predominant key feature of the gowns. The leather strips were loose, (swinging back and forth) adding a dramatic presence as the models walked.

Cavalli's collection featured printed chiffon with more snakeskin details and added leopard print and feathers into the mix on dresses that were busy with glittering crystals or gold leaf amid the fringing which added a real element of tribal drama.  The bleached tones of grey and tan, lavender, cream and spearmint softened the overall look and the shredded chiffon, heavy with detail.

Anna Sui's Summer 2011 collection had a number of nature inspired looks. Beautiful prints, crochet details and prairie-chic ruffles and lace confections.
