Your wedding day is one day that you can go over the top and you can get away with it, so don't feel like you have to follow any set of rules. I think back to my wedding now, and I would have loved to do a French Marie Antoinette look with large hair paired with a colored embroidered gown. Being a bridal consultant for many years, I rarely came across a bride with enough courage to go for something unique and different, ........rather most brides went after safe "bridal looks", I myself included. Simply by adding some color, or combining something uniquely different is one way of standing out. The best advice I can pass on to a bride after witnessing so many brides make their decisions is to shop alone at first. So many brides make the mistake of bringing with them their whole bridal party, whom all have opinions of their own. I have seen it over and over again, a bride knowing her specific style only to have her friends or mother interject a seed of doubt into her personal style. (I know my girlfriends and I differ on specific design styles) After shopping alone, you will learn by experimenting with different styles what works and what does not without people swaying you in the wrong direction. Most brides are sensitive to style, because who wears formal gowns through out their lives? Most often a bridal consultant stays neutral and quiet for the most part because there are so many options that they are trying to figure out what you like and what just doesn't appeal to you. The most successful brides in my opinion are those who shop for their gowns by themselves and then bring in a close friend or their mother(s)to see their top three gowns. Ultimately they decide what they want, and get to incorporte the special moment with those that are close to them.

So............how do you know what you want?

Every woman has pictures on her computer that she loves. Whether it be interior decorating photos, or favorite house pictures, or furniture styles, every woman has a variety of pictures that when examined will fall into a particular category. Country, regal or garden loves can be easily signal a direction when looking for your wedding gown, your headpieces, and your over all design direction with your wedding. When you find what appeals to you, you are able to make decisions that you will love.

How To Be Unique.

Colored sashes on wedding gowns have been extremely popular in magazines these days. A couple years ago, colored wedding gowns were all the rage, and still are extremely popular. I haven't seen a lot of colored gems added to tiaras yet. One way of adding color into your wedding look is to add the color in your jewelry. Wear a ruby necklace, and combine it with adding ruby brooch in your hair. A cream gown paired with emeralds, or rubies or sapphires would be a dynamite bridal look.

A couple brides I once assisted wore gray-silver and gold gowns as their wedding dress, and one bride bought a red raw silk gown to wear on her special day. I once saw a white leather gown on ebay that I debated for my wedding gown. Don't be afraid of going after a unique hairstyle, working with a antique theme, such as 40's hair waves and combine it with Art Deco jewelry. Don't be afraid of tall tiaras as they can be fully balanced with curls or braids. Tall tiaras can be worn at an angle and weaved into your hairstyle for a bit of a different look. A crown can be worn over the top of a bun in the back of your hair.

Consider a straight Egyptian hairstyle, and combine it with a fabulous rhinestone necklace. The famous Elizabeth Taylor wore diamond necklaces in her early films which has been picked up by Paris Hilton and Kirsten Dunst in many Hollywood appearances. Experiment with added hair extensionsto create a full medieval hairstyle or an intricate braided up do. There are so many ways of wearing a headpiece, from flowers woven into your tiara or feathers worn behind your headpiece. Crowns can be perfect jewels for wearing around a large bun, instead of the traditional "Miss America" look. Think out of the box for a unique bridal look that will be remembered for years in those who love you the most. Check out some of the bargains I found on ebay below........ Empress Eugenie had this exquisite pearl tiara made for her for her wedding to Napoleon III. She had the jewelers take the napoléonique pearls which was originally made for Marie~Louise, to make her wedding jewels. Eugenie was a lover of Pearls and can be seen in the portrait below. The crown features 212 pearls and 1998 brilliant-cut diamonds, with a total weight of 63.30 carats. The largest drop-shaped pearl in the entire tiara, in the center position is believed to be the "Perle Napoleon" also known as the "La Regente Pearl." In 1992 the "Amis de Louvre" purchased the diamond tiara and it is where it remains now.

Catharina Svensson became the first Miss Earth in 01, an annual international beauty pageant promoting environmental awareness. In November 09, Larissa Ramos from Brazil became the winner of Miss Earth 2009, and also the first to wear the newly designed crown for the Miss Earth title holder. Official jeweller Ms. Ramona Haar unveiled the newly designed crown on November 16, 2009.

The new crown is made of 100% recycled precious metals. The crown also is comprised of gemstones and semiprecious stones that were donated by the 80+participating countries. The various stones that were sent were black diamonds, sardonyx, calcite, rubies, jade quartz crystal, garnets, peridot, and pearls.

The Miss Earth crown used through the years of 2001 -2008 was designed by award winning designer named Arnel Papa. The crown's frame was made from sterling silver and clear swarovski and pearls.

When Madonna married British film director Guy Ritchie in Scotland, they had a fairy tale wedding held at the century old Skibo Castle in Scotland. The estate is about 7,000 acres. Sadly, the couple divorced after 7 years, but the wedding was remembered. Madonna wore a Gothic style wedding gown for the ceremony designed by Stella McCartney of Paris, and a Paul Gaultier gown for reception and then changed into a Versace dress for dancing. Guests danced the night away in the castle's "basement" which was converted into a disco.

Rumors before the wedding circulated that she would be wearing diamond encrusted cowboy boots but intead choice a pair of Jimmy Choo shoes.

Guy gave her a stinning diamond bracelet she wore on their day which was said to be 19 carats of diamonds. Some reports suggested she was to wear a diamond tiaraonce worn by Princess Grace of Monaco, but later decided on wearing a wearing a 1910 Edwardian diamond tiara costing $250,000 which was loaned to her by Asprey & Garrard.

The Edwardian tiara converts from a tiara on a fixed brown velvet wrapped frame to a fringed necklace. The lines and scrolls from seven graduating floral garlands connected on top by swinging floral festoons, and on the base by ornate scrolls. Madonna decided later to auction off her £170,000 wedding tiara on Ebay to raise money for the Rebuild the Soul of America charity. Still mixed reports suggest the tiara was also worn by the late Princess Grace of Monaco.

One of the most interesting stories in Elizabeth Taylor: My Love Affair with Jewelry, is that of the Shah Jehan Diamond and the La Peregrina pearl.

The large pear-shaped white pearl, which originally weighed 223.8 grains, and was the largest pearl durning these times to be discovered. It was found in 1513 off the Pearl Islands in the Gulf of Panama by a slave.

The history of the pearl is spectacular:

- King Ferdinand V (1479-1516) first made the pearl a part of the Spanish Crown Jewels. It was then passed to his successor King Charles V (1516-1556).

-Phillip II (1556-1598) gave the pearl to Queen Mary I of England

- After Queen Mary's death in 1558 the pearl was then returned to Spain, where for the next 250 years.

- In 1808, Napoleon Bonaparte captured Spain carried the renowned pearl with him. The celebrated pearl became known as the "La Peregrina - the Wanderer." Joseph Bonaparte left the pearl to his nephew Charles Louis Napoleon (Napoleon III) who sold it to the 2nd Marques of Abercorn, as a result of financial difficulties.

- The pearl went to England and then was returned to Spain and remained there for 250 years. It went to France and back to England with the Dukes of Abercorn until the year 1969, when it was purchased by Richard Burton for his wife Elizabeth Taylor. Taylor wore the La Peregrina on many occasions with her former husband Richard Burton on film and public appearances.

In 1969, a 69.42-carat pear-shaped diamond went up for auction with such bidders as Richard Burton, Aristotle Onassis, and a Cartier exec (who eventually won the prize). Angered by defeat, Burton bought the piece the next day for $1.1 million to give to Taylor. The New York Daily Newsreported, "Liz Gets That Peachy Pear," and then thousands flocked to see it at Cartier's New York and Chicago stores, with more than 6,000 viewers daily.
